Of all the various denominational traditions I would have to argue that the most passionate and appealing to me would have to be the Mennonite tradition. I am proud to consider the Mennonites a key part of the history of true churches. However, God has put me in a quest to sharpen his people of all denominations. That being said I believe that there are several doctrines, which have sucked out the life of today’s Mennonite and Amish brethren that need to be put to attention.
Cosmic flesh?
One early doctrine by Menno Simms is a reference to “cosmic flesh”. Arguing that Christ had godlike flesh. I doubt that all Ana-Baptist hold to this teaching.
Isa 53:2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
Phi 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
Phi 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
1Jo 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
It is obvious that scripture demands that Christ was full in his humanity. This is in order for Christ to be the mediator between man and God.
Apocrypha (?)
I have heard that some Amish communities use the apocrypha. This is a sign of Jesuit infiltration into the Amish community. Which is not surprising. However, Biblical Christianity does not recognize the Apocrypha as anything but a man-made collection of writings from alexandrine Jews.
The nature of baptism
A. the fact of immersion
The root meaning of Baptism is the word “immersion”. It is clearly expressed in the gospels.

The clearest example that shows the meaning of baptizo is a text from the Greek poet and physician Nicander, who lived about 200 B.C. It is a recipe for making pickles and is helpful because it uses both words. Nicander says that in order to make a pickle, the vegetable should first be 'dipped' (bapto) into boiling water and then 'baptised' (baptizo) in the vinegar solution. Both verbs concern the immersing of vegetables in a solution. But the first is temporary. The second, the act of baptising the vegetable, produces a permanent change. When used in the New Testament, this word more often refers to our union and identification with Christ than to our water baptism. e.g. Mark 16:16. 'He that believes and is baptised shall be saved'. B. the price of sprinkling
Sprinkling may symbolize washing. Yet immersion symbolizes death. This death is a death to the old world and the family heritage. The contradiction here is that the Amish keeps their children in the same society making repentance have little or no value.
Mat 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

The kingdom is not of this world, The church is not the kingdom

There are two different concepts that are brought up when we think of the church and the kingdom. The kingdom involves the divine sovereign rule of God. While the word “church” is discussing a gathered assembly which we typically assume to be religious.
Luk 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
Act 13:1 Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
The Kingdom is heavenly in nature and churches are local.
Heb 12:22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
1Co 16:19 The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.
Many denominations have assumed that there was a unity in the two and as a result they have assumed that church leaders are to rule church members. We see this play out in various ways.
The Mennonites assume that since the church is the kingdom that the kingdom is not of this world and therefore we see a strict doctrine of separation emerging.
However, Christ was the most holy of all and did not practice such a strict form of separatism.
Mat 9:10 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.
Mat 9:11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?
Mat 9:12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.
Mat 9:13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
The Amish take this doctrine an extra step and separate their entire society from the secular world and as a result they have little to do with the fulfillment of the Great Commission.
The Kingdom is of Heaven, which is why Matthew declares this to be the case redundantly.
We are to pray for the kingdom to come.
Mat 6:10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
However one fact that people do not realize is that Jesus does not relate to saints as a king unto a servant.
Mat 17:24 And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?
Mat 17:25 He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?
Mat 17:26 Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.
Joh 15:15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
We relate to God through our adoption.
Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Rom 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
Rom 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
Rom 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Gal 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Gal 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Gal 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
The price of peace
The Mennonites and Amish want worldwide peace. Yet our world is not peaceful. God has ordained government powers to balance each other out. When a government no longer yields the sword then they risk death.
Rom 13:3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
Rom 13:4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
Another problem is if all Christians practiced this form of pacifism then the government would grow more corrupt since Christians would not be in the government.
The Amish extreme
A. What law?
Amish communities typically place there elders as not only ministers but as legislators of the community.
Elders have an extreme amount of authority over members. For instance they determine what clothes the people may wear and even what items they are to obtain in their houses. I recall the story of an Amish man who was putting aluminum siding on his house. His bishop came by and told him in so many words that he was not allowed to use it because he needed to continuously work. But are Christians supposed to be the slaves of clergy?
1Pe 5:1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
1Pe 5:2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
1Pe 5:3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
Christian Pastors are models of humility. They should not abuse their power and they should not replace the sovereignty of God. God is the Lord of people individually.
Rom 14:4 Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.
Rom 14:10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
Rom 14:11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
Rom 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
B. Where is the gospel?
Mar 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
While many Mennonites, do believe in the great commission, the Amish have typically given up on this concept.
Yet the Bible is clear.
Rom 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Rom 10:12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Rom 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
Rom 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
C. Is the kingdom a race?
Eph 3:5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
Eph 3:6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:
Eph 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Amish have been known to primarily consist of eight families. This easily becomes a racial religion as a result.
Salvation which is eternal
Mennonites are in agreement with the Arminians on the subject of apostasy; most likely, as a result of faulty kingdom theology. However, the Apostle Paul was the Apostle to the Gentiles and he has showed us a deeper understanding of salvation.
Act 26:15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.
Act 26:16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;
Act 26:17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,
Act 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
Eph 3:8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
One aspect of Paul’s revelation is our eternal security
Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Rom 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Rom 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
Rom 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
Rom 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
Rom 8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.
Rom 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Rom 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Rom 8:36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

But doesn’t Peter say that Paul’s words can be distorted?
It can, but look at what Peter says.
1Pe 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
1Pe 1:4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
1Pe 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Finally look at the words of Jesus.
Joh 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
Joh 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
Joh 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
The New Birth gives us hope for tomorrow and security for heaven
1Pe 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
1Pe 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

What is true holiness?
Mar 7:14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:
Mar 7:15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.
Mar 7:16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
Mar 7:17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.
Mar 7:18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;
Mar 7:19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?
Mar 7:20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
Mar 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
Mar 7:22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
Mar 7:23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
Now I don’t want to argue that every Amish handles themselves in this way. There are Amish who understand this on varying levels. An Amish man would have no problem using a hand gun to kill a pig. Since a man, who wants to eat, and not murder, uses the weapon. On the other hand, when we consider the doctrines of uniforms and culture we see an emphasis on culture, which assumes that their culture is the thing which is truly holy.
Historically speaking the Mennonite movement was formed as a New Testament Church and many of her adherents are still of that qualification. However, God will judge us all and we need to critique ourselves so that we do not have a poor witness.
1Pe 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
Like any other community, Satan has tried to work apostasy among the ranks. There has been a strand of apostasy that has been slowly growing in certain Mennonite circles. If this is the case, we must let the word of God judge us and repent. This is humility.
