I. Behold the star!
A. The star in prophecy.
Num 24:15 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said:
Num 24:16 He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:
Num 24:17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
Num 24:18 And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly.
Num 24:19 Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.
"Here is Balaam's prophecy concerning Him who should be the crown and glory of his people Israel; who is David in the type; but our Lord Jesus, the promised Messiah, is chiefly pointed at, and of him it is an
illustrious prophecy. Balaam, a wicked man, shall see Christ, but shall not see him nigh; not see him as Job, who saw him as his Redeemer, and saw him for himself. When he comes in the clouds, every eye shall see him; but many will see him, as the rich man in hell saw Abraham, afar off. He shall come out of Jacob, and Israel, as a Star and a Sceptre; the former denoting his glory and lustre; the latter his power and authority. Christ shall be King, not only of Jacob and Israel, but of all the world; so that all shall be either governed by his golden sceptre, or dashed in pieces by his iron rod. Balaam prophesied concerning the Amalekites and Kenites, part of whose country he had now in view.” Matthew Henry
Let’s look at a secular Jewish perspective.
“17: This v. predicts the destruction of Moab by an Israelite King. Either David or Omri qualifies (2Sam.2; the Mesha [or Moabite] Stone). This v. played a significant role in the 2nd century C.E, when the star (hebrew “kokhav’) was connected by some to Bar Kosba, a Jewish leader who headed an unsuccessful revolt against Rome in 132-35 this verse, some sages renamed this leader Bar Kokhba, “the Son of the Star,” and viewed him as a messianic figure (see esp.y.ta’an. 68d). The revolt was miserable failure.” The Jewish Study Bible (notes on Numbers 24:17)What is really important to note here is we have the confession of liberal Jewish scholars agreeing that this prophecy has been interpreted as being fulfilled by David and the Messiah (though the Jews picked the wrong messiah!) It is also significant that the 1st time we see in history the use of the symbol of the star of David is during the Bar Kokhba rebellion at a synagogue in Capernum. Though Dr. Dave Reagan has stated that this symbol was seen also among 1st century Messianic Jews. (May-June 2008 Lamplighter pg.13)
B. The ensign to the nations
Isa 11:10 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.
Isa 11:11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.
Isa 11:12 And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.Isa 11:13 The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim.
Ensign (Easton’s Bible Dictionary)
(1.) Heb. 'oth, a military standard, especially of a single
tribe (Num. 2:2). Each separate tribe had its own "sign" or
"ensign."
(2.) Heb. nes, a lofty signal, as a column or high pole (Num.
21:8, 9); a standard or signal or flag placed on high mountains
to point out to the people a place of rendezvous on the
irruption of an enemy (Isa. 5:26; 11:12; 18:3; 62:10; Jer. 4:6,
21; Ps. 60:4). This was an occasional signal, and not a military
standard. Elevation and conspicuity are implied in the word.
(3.) The Hebrew word _degel_ denotes the standard given to
each of the four divisions of the host of the Israelites at the
Exodus (Num. 1:52; 2:2; 10:14). In Cant. 2:4 it is rendered
"banner." We have no definite information as to the nature of
these military standards. (See BANNER)
en•sign (µn“s…n, -sºn”) n. 1. A national flag displayed on ships and aircraft, often with the special insignia of a branch or unit of the armed forces. 2. A standard or banner, as of a military unit. 3. Archaic. A standard-bearer. 4. (µn“s…n) Abbr. ENS, Ens. a. A commissioned rank in the U.S. Navy or Coast Guard that is below lieutenant junior grade. b. One who holds this rank. 5.a. A badge of office or power; an emblem. b. A sign; a token.
(American Heritage Dictionary)
As we see the phrase “root of Jesse” let us look to it’s meaning:
Jesse
firm, or a gift, a son of Obed, the son of Boaz and Ruth (Ruth
4:17, 22; Matt. 1:5, 6; Luke 3:32). He was the father of eight
sons, the youngest of whom was David (1 Sam. 17:12). The phrase
"stem of Jesse" is used for the family of David (Isa. 11:1), and
"root of Jesse" for the Messiah (Isa. 11:10; Rev. 5:5). Jesse
was a man apparently of wealth and position at Bethlehem (1 Sam.
17:17, 18, 20; Ps. 78:71). The last reference to him is of
David's procuring for him an asylum with the king of Moab (1
Sam. 22:3).(Easton’s Bible Dictionary)
And so here we have scholarly confirmation of a symbol of the Davidic family Messiah placed as a banner on a flag over Israel.
C. A star is born!
Mat 2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
Mat 2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
Mat 2:3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
Mat 2:4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
Mat 2:5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
Mat 2:6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
Bethlehem is the “city of David”. The star of Bethlehem could easily be labeled the Star of David. We see the only physical sign of this prophecy. Yet the miracle was obvious to the world even though the prophecy was not as obvious.
D. Isn’t the Star of David an idol?
Amo 5:26 But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.
Act 7:43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
Some have argued the Star of David to be a pagan symbol. They use the idolatry of the Babylonian style Jews to argue that the Star of David is obviously their idol.
However, the star of Remphan (or Rephan) is actually a reference to the planet Saturn. In Moloch we see the symbolism of a King.
03594 Kiyuwn {kee-yoon'}
from 03559;; n pr dei
AV - Chiun 1; 1
Chiun = "an image" or "pillar" 1) probably a statue of the Assyrian-Babylonian god of the planet Saturn and used to symbolise Israelite apostasy
The Star of which the Masons and Pagan Jews or Kabbalah look towards is in fact the five-sided pentagram.
“The Star which guided them is that same blazing star, the image whereof we find all initiations. To the Alchemist it is the sign of Quintessence; to the Magist, the Grand Arcanum; to the Kabbalists, the sacred Pentagram. The study of this pentagram could not but lead the Magi to the knowledge of the New Name which was about to raise itself above all names, and cause all creatures capable of adoration to bend the Knee.” Albert Pike Morals and Dogma pg 842
The infamous legendary Mason Albert Pike connects the ancient pagan Kabbalist with the 5 star pentagram instead of the six-sided Star of David. Pike has been laying out an argument for the Star of the Kabbalah being the Star of Bible prophecy. However, we have scene the counterfeit miracle unveiled in the Masonic Lodge notes as the pagan star is identified as a 5 sided pentagram and therefore, not the Star of David.
Now there may be some scattered incidents of this symbol (Star of David) being used for paganism. Paganism can take any symbol or visible object and make it as an idol. (Deuteronomy 4:15-19)
In fact, even the cross itself can and has been used for idolatry. Many pagans including the Ancient Romans have had their own crosses used as objects of worship.
However we should judge a symbol by the truth or heresy it is conveying and whether or not one is focused upon a heretical interpretation. (Read 1Corinthians 8:4-7, Romans 14:19-23)
Finally, many may look to the six corners as a reference to the triple 6 of the Anti-Christ. Yet where do we get the symbol of three out from the star? And while the star has six corners; we must not forget that it has 12 sides representing the 12 tribes and/or 12 Apostles. Some Rabbis argue the six corners point toward the universal extant of Gods sovereignty. (north, South, East West, Up, Down.)
E. The day star
2Pe 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
Rev 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
Here we see the ultimate meaning of the Star conveyed. Christ is that star. I believe the star of David is in fact pointing us toward Christ. Man was created on day six. Jesus is the “Son of man” and the image of the invisible God. (Genesis 1:26-27,31, Colossians 1:14-15)
Yet notice the power of the prophetic fulfillment. Jesus has connected himself with the root of David and the morning star, which in essence ties the two prophecies together!
II. David verses Moses “A tale of two tabernacles”Moses originally was directed to construct the tabernacle. Which served as a moving temple. The structure of this tabernacle was much like the Old Testament and it emphasize a separation of the people from God due to His holiness.
The People of Israel fell into Apostasy and lost the Ark of the Covenant. Though the Ark would be recovered, it would never be returned to the tabernacle of Moses. Though they had plenty of opportunity the priest never went to place it back and continued in the tabernacle to perform the worship services. Truly a sign of apostasy.
When David became King, one of his first official Acts was to set up a tent in Zion and place the Ark their. Unlike the previous tabernacle David had the Ark exposed for everyone to see. Instead of a strict liturgical style of worship David would have dancers, singers, musicians and would write the psalms as the priest would give offerings.
In Moses, we have treatment of a stubborn sinful people not willing to relate to God. In David we see a celebration of a personal intimacy with the Lord. The Jews of Moses time were lost in the wilderness wanting to go back to the idolatry of Egypt. Yet in David the people have finally claimed their rightful inheritance. The Kingdom and administration of David brought with it the theme of a personal relationship with the Lord. Prophecy shows that this was not to be a temporal time lost in the past.
Amo 9:11 In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:
Amo 9:12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this.
Also it is important to notice that this tabernacle and relationship with God would carry on to the Gentiles. It is obvious that the Apostles noted and based their doctrine upon it.
Act 15:14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
Act 15:15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,
Act 15:16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:
Act 15:17 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.
The tabernacle of David is the OT witness of the future Age of Grace presented to us by the Apostle Paul.
III. Jesus the Davidic King
Luk 1:30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
Luk 1:31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
Luk 1:32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
Luk 1:33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
Here we see the that Jesus will inherit the Kingdom of David. Yet the Kingdom of David will indeed be interwoven with the Kingdom of Heaven. As shown by the eternal nature of the promise.
Luk 23:3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.
This reply points to the fact that Jesus is not trying to claim the throne of David, it is just the fact that he has already been recognized as the Davidic King.
Mar 15:12 And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?
Luk 23:37 And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.
Luk 23:38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
The Jewish common people recognized His office as the David King. It was the Pharisees who were in opposition because of the obvious threat to their power. Perhaps Pilate made the effort to recognize the fact of his royal in order appease the common people that He was not the one who threatened their Messiah and he recognized in a political sense his authority. So he was washing his hands of the execution and placing the blame upon the Pharisees.
Mar 15:17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,
Mar 15:18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!
The Roman guards are obviously humiliating Christ. This is in order to send the message that Rome is the supreme authority, and they wanted Christ to submit to it; if he wanted to keep his kingdom.
Joh 19:14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
Joh 19:15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
Here we see the truth behind the Israel establishment. They could have said we have no king besides God or God and Caesar. But they claimed loyalty alone to Caesar because they were in fact Roman apostates. It was Jesus who was the rightful ruler over Israel. Yet the Israeli government chose slavery to the Roman Empire over the Freedom of Christ.
Joh 19:20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
Joh 19:21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
Joh 19:22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
Once again Pilate is careful to acknowledge the Sovereignty of Christ so that his guilt is expunged. However Rome was still guilty because the Sanhedren was in truth Roman. However the World knew that Jesus was indeed the Christ in the line of David.
IV. Our Davidic kingdom
Mat 3:2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
This may sound quite controversial, but could it be that the Davidic throne would reign as the Kingdom of Heaven. We know that Christ is the king of that Kingdom and has the inheritance of the Davidic throne. We must all recognize the Sovereignty of Christ alone.
Mat 4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
Mat 4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Mat 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
Here we see that Christ unlike other men does not tempt God in order to wield his power. However the devil has made an unchallenged point that by having the Davidic throne which is implied by the pinnacle of the Jerusalem temple he has heavenly authority.
Mat 1:1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Mat 1:6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;
Here is clear testimony to the fact of Jesus as the ancestor of David.
Mat 9:27 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us.
Many of the Jews knew of the power of the Davidic Messiah and apparently of his mercy.
Mat 12:3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;
Mat 12:4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?
Mat 12:5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
Mat 12:6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
Mat 12:7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
Here we have Christ Justifying His actions through the authority of the Davidic monarchy. Also Christ is down playing the authority of the mosaic Covenant since it is who rule Israel through David and not Moses.
Mat 12:23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?
Mat 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.
Mat 12:25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
Mat 12:26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?
Mat 12:27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.
Mat 12:28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.
Here we may notice that the Davidic Kingdom of Christ is in direct antithesis to the Kingdom of Satan. It is also superior to demonic authority.
Mat 21:6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them,
Mat 21:7 And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.
Mat 21:8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.
Mat 21:9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
Mat 21:10 And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?
Mat 21:11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.
Mat 21:12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,
Mat 21:13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.
Mat 21:14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.
Mat 21:15 And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the son of David; they were sore displeased,
Mat 21:16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?
Rom 1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;
Here it is obvious that the city had accepted Jesus as the Davidic Messiah and King. Notice also that like David erecting the tabernacle Christ has symbolically freed Israel from apostate temple slavery; by demolishing the temples of the moneychangers. Jesus acknowledges the confession of the temple children ordained of God.
Mar 11:10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.
Hosanna literally means an invitation to salvation.
Act 1:6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
Act 1:7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
Act 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
The Davidic throne however was not active on earth since Israel had not been restored. This awaits the millennial Kingdom.
Act 2:25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
Act 2:26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
Act 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Act 2:28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.
Act 2:29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
Act 2:30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
Here Peter explains the fulfillment of God’s covenant with David. David’s family would reign through the resurrection. Not through natural political means but supernaturally through Christ..
Act 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
Act 2:32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
Act 2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
Act 2:34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
Act 2:35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
Act 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
The sermon at Penticost was a time where the Jews were now to repent and acknowledge the Lordship of Christ, which has been proven through the line of David. (Alongside the obvious proof of His divinity!)
Act 4:23 And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.
Act 4:24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
Act 4:25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?
Act 4:26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
Act 4:27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
Act 4:28 For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.
Here we see the condemnation of the pharisees that they have rejected the rightful authority of Jesus and his apostles. Though many would assume the Apostles were rebelling it was in fact the rebellion of Israel.
Act 7:43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
Act 7:44 Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.
Act 7:45 Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;
Act 7:46 Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
Act 7:47 But Solomon built him an house.
Act 7:48 Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,
Act 7:49 Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?
Act 7:50 Hath not my hand made all these things?
The false kingdom is incapable of driving out idols. Yet the true kingdom is militant and in opposition to the idols which it will destroy. Through the temple system the Kingdom of God is suppressed. Yet the Lord is Sovereign throughout the earth and Heaven.
Act 13:22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.
Act 13:23 Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:
Act 13:24 When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
Act 13:25 And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.
Act 13:26 Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.
Act 13:27 For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him.
Act 13:28 And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain.
Act 13:29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre.
Act 13:30 But God raised him from the dead:
Act 13:31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people.
Act 13:32 And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,
Act 13:33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
Act 13:34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.
Act 13:35 Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Act 13:36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:
Act 13:37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.
Act 13:38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:
Act 13:39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
Act 13:40 Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets;
Act 13:41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.
Act 13:42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.
Here the Apostle Paul unlocks the mystery of David. He is called a man after God’s own heart because even though he had the curse of original sin God loved the virtue which he showed. David loved God and delighted in Him. His was a spirit of fellowship with God. This is why David was a man after God’s own heart because he loved Jehovah and pursued his heart.
It is in this spirit that Christ came. The Israelites assumed a type like John the Baptist who would preach repentance. But the repentance that John the Baptist preached was not towards legalism but towards Christ. John was only one preparing just as Moses had been preparing the people for the promised land and yet never attained it.
So here is the word of salvation. Even the merit of scriptural knowledge may not bring the gift of grace. As we see from the Jews. Instead the office of most is a rival to the kingdom of David. Ultimatly David and the prophets were looking forward towards Jesus Christ, the savior. As good a man as he was David was a sinner who died hoping in a Savior. This Savior is our Christ. It is through this perfect King Christ that we have the grace which is salvation. Through the David Christ we have no need of the Law. Christ has justified us through himself.
Those Jews rejected the mercies of David for the Law of Moses. Hwever the Gentiles would receive it by faith.
Act 15:13 And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me:
Act 15:14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
Act 15:15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,
